Greater Works Than Jesus?

Dear Parson,

QUESTION: In John 14:12, Jesus said to His disciples that they would do greater works than His. How can that be?

ANSWER: Jesus was explaining to them why He had to ascend to His Father. He would pray to His Father to send the Holy Spirit to indwell each believer (v. 16-17). That was the same source of power through which Christ did His works. "How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him." (Acts 10:38)

Greater can mean in quality or quantity. Certainly the quality of Christ's works was not exceeded, but the quantity of His works was.

Christ's physical ministry was limited to a small part of the world. However, through the Holy Spirit working in the conglomerate ministry of Christ's followers, the whole world could be reached. That is truly a greater work.

Don't miss out on being a part of that greater work!
